The lakehouse changed enterprise data architecture. It brought data together so organizations could analyze it, build models, and make decisions at scale. But the next generation of software has a different requirement: it needs to act on what’s happening now.

AI agents are moving from insight to action. That means the systems behind them have to operate on the current state of the business, not a copy of it from hours ago. That changes what the infrastructure underneath them needs to do. The data can’t be hours old, the system can’t depend on a batch pipeline catching up, and it can’t simply deliver an answer. It needs to provide current data, performance, controls, and visibility so teams can take action reliably in production.

The lakehouse was built for understanding data. Streamhouse is an architecture for putting live data to work. This means continuously capturing, transporting, transforming, governing, and serving the current state of a business so production applications and agents can act on it.

We’re not saying the lakehouse is obsolete. Organizations will continue to need it for analytics, historical context, model development, and many other workloads. What we are saying is real-time operational systems need a first-class architectural model of their own.

That’s why today, alongside Aiven, Confluent, StreamNative, and Ververica, we’re founding the Streamhouse Working Group and putting forward a vendor-neutral architecture for the next generation of real-time data infrastructure.

Built around customer demand

The building blocks for Streamhouse aren’t new. Streaming, event processing, SQL databases, APIs, and analytics all play important roles. What’s changing is how they need to work together when software continuously processes live data, makes decisions, and takes action in production.

Customers are already asking for this. They’re building systems that need to respond to what’s happening in real time, and they need a clear architectural model for doing that reliably and at scale.

Redpanda unifies streaming, federated SQL, and system connectivity in a single BYOC platform that runs inside the customer’s cloud, aligning with how enterprises increasingly want to operate, with greater control over data and execution while reducing cost and operational complexity.

That demand creates an opportunity for the industry to do something bigger than any one vendor: come together around an open, vendor-neutral architecture that gives customers a clear foundation for building these systems. We compete in parts of this market, but we share a responsibility to help customers navigate what’s changing and build against a common architectural model.

That’s the point of Streamhouse.

Why mission-critical AI needs a control plane

The next phase of AI won’t be defined by what models can do in a demo. It will be defined by whether businesses can trust agents to do real work. That takes more than better models and more data. It takes infrastructure that can continuously deliver current data, process events, enforce the right controls, and support action in production.

Real-time data matters, but it isn't why agents are stuck in the sandbox. Most enterprises rightly don't trust agents to act in production. Aside from current data, production also needs control over what an agent can do and evidence of what it did. Some agents consume streaming data, but most connect directly to the operational systems, databases, and SaaS applications that run the business. Governance that stops at the data platform stops well short of where the agent actually operates. 

So the control plane has to span everything the agent touches: the current state of the business, control over its actions, and a record of what it did. That is what a Streamhouse architecture makes possible, and it's what the Redpanda Agentic Data Plane puts into production for agent governance today.
