Redpanda Serverless Standard deprecation FAQ

When will my service change?

Serverless Standard will be retired on August 30, 2025. Existing clusters will be automatically migrated to our new Serverless platform on August 31, 2025. The new Redpanda Serverless platform features higher performance and a different pricing model (covered below).

Why the change?

Our next-generation Serverless platform introduces:

  • Higher usage limits
  • Competitive pricing
  • Expanded region coverage
  • Optional annual commitments and support plans

We are still committed to a self-serve, pay-as-you-go model, but now with a more powerful service that can better scale performance and evolve with your development requirements and business needs.

How do my rates change?

Pricing varies by region, but here is AWS us-east-1 as an example:

New: Serverless (us-east-1) Deprecated: Serverless Standard (us-east-1)
- $0.10 per cluster/per hour - $0.003 per partition/per hour
- $0.0015 per partition/per hour - $0.1 per GB written
- $0.045 per GB written - $0.1 per GB read
- $0.04 per GB read - $0.1 per GB/per month retention
- $0.09 per GB/per month retention

Understanding the new per-cluster-hour pricing dimension

The new Serverless pricing model introduces a per-cluster-hour model. Think of it as a minimum base fee for using a cluster. Usage includes either of the following:

  • Data processing for reads or writes
  • Retention of topics and partitions

Even if the cluster is not actively processing data, the per-cluster-hour fee still applies for retaining topics and partitions.

How do I minimize fees for idle or unneeded clusters under the new pricing model?

To minimize fees for inactive clusters — while preserving cluster, users, ACLs and secrets configurations (but not the data) — you can delete all topics for these clusters. You will not be charged for empty clusters containing zero topics. (See the "Uptime" entry in our docs for more on Serverless Usage Metrics.)

You can create new topics the next time you need to use the cluster, via the Redpanda Cloud Console, the rpk CLI, or the Data Plane APIs for Serverless.

How does performance change?

Below are the performance highlights. Please see all documented Serverless usage limits here.

New: Serverless Deprecated: Serverless Standard
- Write throughput up to 100 MB/sec - Write throughput up to 10 MB/sec burst (sustained 0.5 MB/sec guaranteed)
- Read throughput up to 300 MB/sec - Read throughput up to 30 MB/sec burst (sustained 1.5 MB/sec guaranteed)
- Partitions 5,000 max - Partitions 100 max

Which regions are supported?

Serverless currently runs on AWS across 7 regions:

  • ap-northeast-1
  • ap-south-1
  • ap-southeast-1
  • eu-central-1
  • eu-west-2
  • us-east-1
  • us-west-2

We're working to add more regions (and cloud providers), so be sure to check our documentation for the latest details on Serverless supported regions.

How can I estimate my workload before this pricing change takes effect?

To size your workload and explore pricing options per-region, please see our new pricing calculator.
